Every week we get asked the same question: “Should I get a ceramic coating or just stick with wax?” The honest answer depends on your budget, how much you care about protecting your paint, and how much maintenance you want to do.
We have applied both for eight years. Here is what we tell our customers.
What Is Wax?
Car wax is a natural or synthetic product that sits on top of your paint as a sacrificial barrier. It adds gloss, fills in minor imperfections, and provides basic protection from UV and water. The problem is it wears off quickly — usually within 2-8 weeks depending on conditions.
Wax is affordable and easy to apply yourself. A good paste wax costs $20-50 and takes about an hour to do. For people who enjoy washing and waxing their own car, it is a solid option.
What Is Ceramic Coating?
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your car's clear coat. Once cured, it creates a semi-permanent layer of protection that lasts 1-5 years. It does not sit on top of the paint like wax — it becomes part of the surface.
The result is intense water beading, deeper gloss, stronger UV protection, and resistance to bird droppings, tree sap, and road chemicals. It also makes your car dramatically easier to wash because dirt has a harder time bonding to the surface.
We install Shield Ceramic Coatings at our shop in Henrico, NC. Shield is made in Raleigh, NC and comes in 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year options starting at $500.

The Bottom Line
Wax is a good temporary solution. Ceramic coating is a long-term investment. If you are going to keep your vehicle for a few years and want it to look great with minimal effort, ceramic coating pays for itself in time saved and paint preserved. If you are unsure, start with our Diamond detail package — it includes a 6-month paint sealant that gives you a taste of what long-term protection feels like.
